We’ll just have to call this the year of the hold-over with all known lakes in the area suffering virtually no winter-kill the fishing in the Methows lowland mid-land lakes has been outstanding. I have been trying to be disciplined enough to keep trying new places but I have gone back to a few more than once lately.

Fishing for trout I think has been best in three places Buzzard Lake just over the Loup Loup Pass, Little Twin and Cambel lakes in the Methow. I would say the size of the fish ranks in the order previous as well although the fight of Little Twins fish could put it in first for sure. Most trout fishing has been about the staples buggers, chronis, damsels (nymph and adult) and San Juan worms.

As well as trout I have been out chucking at bass as is often to my liking at this time of the year as well. The Methow isn’t always talked about as a spinney ray Mecca but it’s not hard to find very large and aggressive bucket mouths ready to show you a good time. Fishing for bass is exciting and can test your nerves as well as your accuracy as casting into structure is the name of the game.

I know what you’re thinking though, what about the river! Well the river and it’s tribs the Twisp and Chewuch are shaping up quite well in fact we have been catching fish already and it’s just going to get better. My focus at this point is usually from Winthrop to Wieman Bridge on the Methow and the Twisp River right now. So far with water being fast as it is streamers and believe it or not dries are working best right now.

Remember the water is FAST right now; exercise extreme caution and try to fish from bank or boat as getting in even to your knees could be surprisingly powerful right now. Buzzard Lake

Buzzard Lake

Speaking as someone born and raised in the Methow I would say this has been one of the most “normal” springs you will ever see. Coupled with the already great weather the fishing has been great too with most lakes in the Methow holding over well, which has lead to some large fish.
Recently I have been out to many different lakes from the low to the mid-lands of the Methow and Okanogan Valleys. Fishing at many of these lakes has been good enough to make me just want to keep going back, but with ever more reports of others in the same condition I have spent my time trying to check out as many as possible.

Leader Lake has been a productive place to get your spinney-ray fix (Crappie, Blue Gill and Bass) but was not performing well the day I tried it, however I will still go back soon. Buzzard and Little Twin on the other hand have been producing some monsters. At Buzzard lake fish were from 16—24 inches and at Little Twin hold-overs seem to be 16-20 with one fish taking the prize for being the first fish to put me into my backing this season with an absolutely smoking aerial performance.

The rivers are slowly coming down and will be fishable soon by foot. I have tried twice on the Twisp with a few bites here and there and the loss of a very nice fish this week. However fishing on the Twisp, Chewuch and Methow will depend on air temps staying stable, any fluctuation over 80 degrease over the next few weeks will lead to high water the following day.
