97.5 KTRT “the Root” fishing report with Deputy Don and Leaf

Here is the fish report for this week.

Bugs

As mentioned in my previous fishing report I’ve been burning through the bugs as fishing has been pretty dang good and since it decided to be cold for a few days I’ve been getting some work done at the vice and I thought I would share a couple of my favorite patterns for this time of year.
First “Leaf’s not so Perfect Golden Stone” as they are in the drift year-round they also work year-round for Steelhead and Cutthroat alike.

Golden Stone
Second a couple variations on the classic Chironomid both are red ice cream cone head one is a double and the other a single. Most people know of Chironomids as a lake fly originating in B.C. where it was developed for fishing Kamloops and Girard rainbow trout but they are also a deadly Steelhead fly as well.

Someone turned on the fire-hose, with the pine apple express pointed straight at us the temps are back up and there is presip again finally.  I don’t know what I’m happier for the snow or the warm up but I will take them both and so will the fish no doubt.

Look for fishing to improve with the weather also expect more fish to start to push up river.  I would stick to the old reliable small bead heads, chronis and stone fly as well though think about throwing some egg patterns back in the mix too, remember steelhead don’t just eat other fishes eggs they are also famous for gorging on eggs from their own species as well.

Late winter is here and it should just keep getting better so get out there!

Steelhead Gear: 7-8 wt floating line with a nymph and strike indicator set up. Switch 6-8 wt rod work great also. 7-8 wt floating line with a dry skating fly works well early in the season. 7-8 wt floating line with a sinking line for swinging.
Summer River Gear: 4-5 wt dry fly hopper/dropper set up, a deep stone fly nymphing rig with a strike indicator and a 6-7 wt sinking line with a big bugger/nymph set up.
